The World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment .
Commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the major initiatives with which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness for the environment and encourages political attention and action.
On this day we must examine the state of our environment, carefully consider the actions that each of us can and will take, and then take the set resolution to respect all life on earth while sober lifestyle and quiet confidence.
The Agenda is:
1. Giving a human face to environmental issues;
2. Empowering individuals to become active participants in an equitable and sustainable development;
3. Promote an understanding that communities are crucial to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
4. Facilitate partnership links that will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future
The theme for 2009 is: "The Your planet needs you, united to fight climate change ". It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on new deal in Copenhagen at the crucial Convention on Climate Change climate and to cooperate in overcoming poverty and for the management of environmental resources.
The World Environment Day is a popular event that can be celebrated in many ways: street demonstrations, bicycle parades, concerts in parks, essays and school competitions, screenings of documentaries, photo exhibitions, tree planting, recycling campaigns for the cleaning of degraded areas.
