A day (or a life ...) without meat and meat products - UN appeal
For one day no meat
the Tirreno - June 9, 2010 page 18
Today we talk about food because it too has an important role in protecting the environment. And we take the opportunity to publish a desperate appeal of the United Nations against the excessive consumption of meat, fish and dairy products (milk, eggs, butter, cheese etc.).. The reason? Factory farms are considered an "ecological bomb". In fact, to produce huge quantities of meat and fish required by the markets at affordable prices will divert precious resources of our planet as water and oxygen. Consider that to produce milk derivatives, is consumed 70% of fresh water worldwide, 38% of the total use of land and have issued 19% of greenhouse gases. The proposal is therefore that the UN not to eat meat, fish and dairy products at least once a week. If you think about it, not even a big sacrifice. But in fact if it were adopted on a global scale this change of diet would thank our planet. Moreover consume products made with a lot of resources but of poor quality because they often also rich in hormones and antibiotics. It is a demonstration that people become ill, although well-fed. So eating too much meat is bad for everyone. Now we go into summer, it might be a good opportunity to change the system and consume more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. - Paul
